Year-round van life is entirely achievable. A van does not need an extreme winter specification to stay useful beyond summer, but a few choices made during conversion can make cold and wet trips much more comfortable.
The priorities are straightforward: slow down heat loss, fit a suitable heater, cover the largest areas of glass and make sure the leisure electrical system can support the equipment you use.
Get the insulation right during conversion
Insulation is difficult to improve once the furniture and wall panels are fitted, so it is worth discussing properly at the start of a conversion. Ask what material will be used and how the walls, roof, doors and floor will be covered.
Good insulation will not warm the van by itself. It simply helps the interior retain heat for longer and reduces the number of very cold surfaces inside. The quality and coverage of the installation matter more than an impressive product name or a single thickness figure.
If you are buying a converted van, ask for photographs or records from the build. You may not be able to see the insulation at a viewing, but you can look for cold draughts, damp areas and poor finishing around doors, panels and the pop-top.
Choose a heater that suits the van
A properly installed diesel air heater is a common choice for a VW campervan because it can warm the interior without running the engine. Other systems can work too. What matters is that the heater is suitable for the size of the van, installed safely and easy to control.
Ask the converter to explain where the heater, fuel supply, warm-air outlet and controller will be fitted. At handover, run it from cold, check that warm air reaches the living space and learn how to complete its shutdown cycle. Keep the servicing information with the van.
A working carbon monoxide alarm and smoke alarm are sensible essentials in any campervan with fuel-burning equipment. Test both regularly and replace them according to the manufacturer's instructions.
Use insulated window screens
The windscreen and cab windows form a large area of exposed glass. Well-fitting insulated screens or covers can make a noticeable difference at night and also give privacy. Internal screens are quick to fit; external covers can reduce condensation on the inside of the windscreen but are bulkier to store when wet.
Use fitted blinds or curtains on the remaining windows. If you sleep in the pop-top during colder weather, a suitable thermal liner or wrap can help because the fabric section loses heat more quickly than the insulated body of the van.
Allow for winter electrical use
Diesel heaters still use electricity for their controller, pump and fan. The fridge, lights and phone charging continue to draw power as well. At the same time, short winter days can reduce what a solar panel produces.
Explain your likely trips to the converter and ask how long the leisure battery and charging system should support those everyday loads. Check how it charges while driving and from mains hook-up, as well as from solar where fitted. Fixed battery or solar figures are less useful than a system sized around how you will actually camp.
Keep condensation in proportion
People, cooking and wet clothing add moisture to a small interior. Allow some ventilation, keep wet boots and coats away from bedding, and wipe away moisture that gathers on cold glass. This is usually a matter of simple habits rather than filling the van with extra equipment.
A few useful cold-weather habits
Arrive with the leisure battery charged and test the heater before a winter trip. Keep warm bedding in the van, carry a dry mat for the sliding door and give damp kit somewhere defined to go. If freezing conditions are expected, follow the converter's instructions for protecting or draining the water system.
The aim is not to turn a compact campervan into a house. It is to make the van easy to warm, comfortable to sleep in and practical when the weather is less inviting.
