Barn doors vs tailgate - can influence the rack you choose
Ideally you need a rack that either swings open with the doors or clears them entirely so the doors can open. Certain models rock backwards or rotate sideways even with bikes on so you can open the doors fully without removing the rack. Most other towbar racks require you to unhitch or remove the bikes, which is annoying when you're stopping regularly and need to access your gear in the back.
Tailgate owners often choose a rear-door mounted rack that attaches directly to the tailgate and stays put - these sit higher up and the arms fold inwards when not in use (again you'll need to remove the bikes to get rear access). They're fine for regular bikes, but weight limits are lower (typically 35kg total), so if you're carrying e-bikes - which weigh 20-30kg each - a towbar rack is the safer bet. Towbar racks can handle 30kg per bike comfortably and keep the weight low on the vehicle.
Most of the main racks sell extension kits too - a two-bike rack becomes a three, or a three becomes a four. Worth knowing before you buy, because it means you can start with the size you need now and bolt on extra capacity later if the family grows or friends want to ride.
Towbar racks
The widest choice and the best weight capacity. Most handle 60kg total (two regular bikes or two lighter e-bikes). Platform-style racks are more stable than hanging-style and easier to load, but cost more.

Door-mounted racks
No towbar required - these bolt directly to your tailgate or barn doors. Lower weight capacity (typically 35kg) and fewer options, but a solid choice if you don't have a towbar or don't want one. The Fiamma Carry-Bike is the standard choice for T5/T6.

Extensions & accessories
Most racks can be extended - a 2-bike becomes a 3, or a 3 becomes a 4. Check compatibility with your specific rack model before ordering.
The towbar question
You need a towbar before a towbar rack makes sense. The Westfalia detachable is the standard recommendation: genuine quality, detachable when not needed, and compatible with all the main rack manufacturers. A fixed towbar is cheaper but can spoil the aesthetic of a van you've invested in. The detachable coupling takes 30 seconds to remove.
Specify the towbar with 13-pin electrics (not 7-pin) - the rack's indicator and brake lights need it, and some racks need 13-pin for full lighting and reversing-light function.
Always check compatibility with your specific vehicle before buying. Van models, years, and conversion specs vary - we can't guarantee every product fits every setup. If in doubt, contact the manufacturer or your converter.
