Campervan insurance
Standard motor insurance typically doesn't cover the conversion elements of your van - the fitted furniture, appliances, solar, and habitation equipment. You need specialist campervan insurance that covers the conversion at an agreed value, includes new-for-old on fitted equipment, and understands the DVLA classification (most converted T5s and T6s are still registered as goods vehicles or light commercial vehicles, not motorhomes).
Brentacre is consistently the best starting point for T5 and T6 owners. They specialise in this class of vehicle, offer agreed value policies, and include EU cover as standard - but they don't appear on comparison sites, so ring them or quote direct at brentacre.co.uk. Adrian Flux and Comfort Insurance are also worth a direct quote for converted vans.
To cover the rest of the market in one go, the comparison service below puts your details in front of a panel of specialist campervan insurers. Use it alongside a direct Brentacre quote and you've covered the field.
Pre-purchase inspection
If you're buying privately, get an independent inspection. Not from a friend who "knows about cars" - a VAT-registered VW specialist who can put the van on a ramp and check what you can't see during a viewing. The RAC and AA both offer inspection services; an independent VW specialist is often better for T5/T6 specific issues (DSG gearbox, AdBlue system, rear axle wear).
Budget £150-350 depending on the inspection level. On a £25,000+ purchase it's not optional. The inspection either confirms a good buy or saves you from an expensive mistake. Either outcome is worth the money.
Always run an HPI check before viewing any private sale van - it takes five minutes online and confirms there's no outstanding finance, the van hasn't been written off, and the plate hasn't been changed.
Always check compatibility with your specific vehicle before buying. Insurance requirements and inspection scope vary depending on your van, its conversion, and your intended use. Always confirm cover details directly with the insurer.
Insurance and inspection FAQ
Do I need specialist campervan insurance?
Yes. Standard van insurance may not properly cover the conversion, fitted furniture, appliances, solar or agreed value. Use a campervan specialist and explain the conversion clearly.
Is an HPI check enough?
No. An HPI check is useful for finance, write-off and mileage markers, but it will not tell you whether the engine, chassis or conversion work is sound.
Who should inspect a used campervan?
Use a VAT-registered VW specialist or a recognised inspection service. A friend who knows cars is better than nothing, but they may miss camper-specific issues.
